New Faces, Deaths and Woes

It's been a rollercoaster day in fish land. David and I went to the fish store and came home with some new babies. I got a male betta and 2 pregnant guppies (for the 3rd time, I'm going to try to keep a 1/2 black alive!) David bought some neon tetras to go in my main tank.

When we got home, I was going to move my two very pregnant guppies into the newest tank of females, but discovered they have infections. I treated the water, but don't know if it's too late. Then, just now as I was doing "homework," I looked up to see Portia attack and kill one of my tequila sunrise guppies. I don't know if he was already sick or if she'd been working on him for a few days. He'd been up at the surface and a little chewed up for a couple of days. Today, she grabbed him by the tail and shook. While it was impressive, it was very sad. Of my originals, I'm now down to 1. In fact, not counting fry, I have only 2 males left! Hopefully the fry will prove sturdier as well as genetically impressive!

Waiting

I'm just waiting, somewhat impatiently, for my new guppies to pop. I should have a bunch of fries/fry from the size of them!

New females

Yesterday, I bought some new female guppies. I asked for the most pregnant guppies they had and I ended up with 4 good ones. I've put a little epsom salt in their tank (aka tub) and I'm just waiting now. Shouldn't be long!

Also, I moved some fry into the gender tanks. Now I'm ready for something to happen...

Babies

I went to check on the fish in the new fish room and guess what! Babies! My ONLY remaining female decided that today was a pretty good day to have a few fry. I counted about 10 of them, but there are so many in there now it's hard to tell!

Room to grow!

The shelves are built and set up. We have some tanks on them already. Of course, I forsee some new jars, buckets, tanks and other trouble-causing fish-holding containers in the not-so-distant future. That's if I can get any of my females to live! I lost another one today!

So, here's the event tally for today:

*added 1 guppy and 1 dalmation molly
*lost 1 female guppy
*gave Ty 2 feeder guppies
*lost new guppy
*yelled at Portia for nibbling on the dead guppy.

Speaking of which, I never took the other dead guppy out, but it's definitely gone...

Half-black

One of the feeder guppies seems to be growing up to be a half-black. I think she's going to be yellow. I'm very excited about this!

Plan

I'm in the process of building shelves in the craft room. I say "in the process of" because all of the work is done, but they don't quite work yet. Tomorrow, God willing, we should have the rest of the materials and be able to get them done. Anyway, here's my plan:

I want to put all 4 of the small (1 gallon) tanks on the shelves. Then I want to get them all going. In one tank, I'll have fry. In one tank, I'll have females. In the other two, I'll have the juvenile sexed fish. When they're big enough, they can move to the fish tank or the fish store.

On my fish board, there are people with shelves and shelves of jars filled with fry and little bubblers. That's pretty awesome! I think if I could get my main tank cycled and then just get enough guppies, I'd be able to keep everyone alive.

Once I have some mature guppies that aren't store-bought (or were at least bought pre-maturity), I can start my genetics experiments. THAT I'm excited for! It shouldn't be long, either. A couple months at most!

Death and treatment

Ich treatment continues. Today is the 2nd dose out of 3, so we're about 1/2 done. Everyone looks pretty good at the moment, actually. Well, all except the other Walmart fish. He was maybe a green grass or something and he's gone now.

I also separated the male and female feeders into two 1-gal tanks. I need to go back and move a couple males back out of the female tank. Tricky little things puffed up and lied to me to get in with the girls.

Oh boy

There's mass death going on in my tanks. The 1/2 black and yellow guy died. My citrus orange died. The females are looking rough. The fry seem to be fewer and the feeders are dropping like flies. I'm treating for ich and other parasites, so we'll see how it goes. Poor guys. I'm just hoping that Portia hangs on!

Addition and sickness

I added one guppy to the community tank. He's a little top-sword tail feeder from the batch Ty and I bought this week. He's not all that special, but I thought he was pretty and his tail is cool. It kind of looks like a can-opener.

Also, I'm not sure if my little yellow-tail girl has ick, but she's looking a little rough. My black and white girl that got scratched by the airstone is looking fuzzy, too. I may be losing two more. :(

Cleaning

Just so I can keep track, I cleaned the tanks today. An almost 50% water change/vaccuum in the 10 gal. Complete wash and restock in both 1 gallons. Everyone should be happy now!

Also, I lost one fry. I had 12 (not 13 or 10) but I'm now down to 11. The switching tanks was a little hard on them I guess.

One down

I should have posted this the other day, but one of my black and white females died. It was a pretty certain thing. She'd gotten caught in the filter tube and had worn herself out against the air stone. Still, it was sad. She was pregnant and due pretty soon.

In other news, I cleaned all the tanks today! Hooray!
